Thanks, Ovid. I had just looked at the manifest for Class ::DBI and noticed that there were no XS components; I didn't think about the possibility of excessive dependencies. :-) Even so, I probably should have mentioned the CPAN shell (which tachyon's guide does mention). Impossible Robot
